Research is supposed to be boring. Some writer’s complain about the amount of research they have to do. But there’s some really neat stuff out there that you can use.

Mainstream Fallacy – You Can’t Edit Yourself

There’s a lot of people who’ll tell you that you can’t edit yourself. Simply put, they’re full of bovine digestive byproduct.

Writers Always Edit

Think. What’s the first thing you are told when you are getting a manuscript ready for submission? That it has to be letter-perfect.

How do you make it letter-perfect? You edit it. Likely you edit it yourself, because you can’t afford to hire an editor.

The Human Wave – Resurrection of Hope

1984

1984

“Human Wave Writing” is the new thing in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Or maybe it’s the old thing, resurrected.

For a long time it has been hard, not make that damned near impossible to buy SF&F books that are INSPIRING. Sorry for the caps. I really didn’t mean to yell at you. But it is true. For far too long most “Professional Publishers” have seemed to only wanted to print books which were inspired by George Orwell’s 1984.

Guess what guys, 1984 was nearly thirty years ago. For a short time that sort of book was topical. Now, it isn’t. Is it any wonder readers are showing less interest in the books you are selling? Is it any wonder writers don’t want to write for you anymore?

The Human Wave

Humans are the most successful species to ever live on this planet. As a species we went from being food for large feline carnivores (see the articles about ancient hominid skulls found in Southern Africa with leopard bite marks) to practically wiping out most of the larger predators, and having to institute conservation programs to preserve the remainder.

Humans are generally optimistic. We have reason. We’ve conquered nearly every challenge we’ve faced, and are working on the ones we haven’t solved yet. So we like reading optimistic stories, stories that tell about a hero overcoming great odds and winning a princess, or becoming Empress of the Galaxy.

Sure, there’s a place for stories where everyone dies. I write them myself, for Horror fans. Different genre, different reason for reading.

Most Science Fiction and Fantasy fans read expecting a happy ending, or at least a middling ending leading to a happy ending three books further on. That’s why they read SF&F, for the affirmation of the strength of the human spirit.

And that’s why the Human Wave exists.

Self Publishing

The Human Wave couldn’t exist without self publishing. The major publishers that handle SF&F, with the exception of Baen Books, don’t understand SF&F. Because they don’t understand it, they’ve been slowly destroying it. Writers can’t get perfectly good books published because they don’t meet criteria that the publishers have set up. Don’t take my word for this. Do a Google Search on “Human Wave Fiction” and read the articles that come up.

In particular I recommend the posts on Sarah Hoyt’s site, starting with:

Sarah’s done a lot of thinking about the subject. While I’m concentrating on the “positive story” side, because that’s what I miss the most, there’s other sides to this too. All my fiction sales have been short fiction, so I’ve missed out on all the problems the novel writers have had. Mind, I’ve heard all about them…

Every story, novelette, or novel that the publishers have blocked is something that the readers haven’t had to read. And there’s a huge market for upbeat fiction. Most people want to read about good things. Except for Horror fans. They want to read about everyone getting eaten by the werewolf at the end. Different tastes…

The Human Wave is going to change fiction. I know a lot of readers who have complained that they just can’t find good stuff to read. Stuff like Doc Smith, Bob Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Lester Del Rey, Clifford Simak, A. E. van Vogt, etc. Now they’ll have a chance again, and they’ll take it.

Self publishing fixes this. I allows writers to bypass the publishers who’ve long since lost sight of the reason they exist – to satisfy the reading appetite of the readers.

Automation and Writing

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett Dunsany (Lord Dunsany) wrote all of his works using a quill pen, an old-fashioned affection for the time. But are writers today any better?

Amazon Writer’s Pages

Wayne Borean Publishing is publishing Shirley Meier’s novel Sparks in the Wind. I’m working with Shirley on the final edits, which are mostly of the “does that comma belong there” type. Shirley is a pro, her writing doesn’t need a heck of a lot of work from my end.

Then comes promotion… I was looking at Shirley’s page on Amazon, and it only listed three books! Amazon has a system where you can tell them about errors, so I found Shirley’s books that were listed on Amazon, and sent Amazon correction notices. A day later I got an email saying they were accepting my updates.

If you, or one of your clients has an incomplete Amazon page, the time spent to get it updated can pay off big time. A writer with seven books listed looks a lot more impressive than one with three books listed.

Tomorrow we’ll see how Amazon handles books that they’ve never carried…

Beware of Publishing Experts – Including Me

Yeah, I know a lot. At least I think I do.

So does James C. Tanner. The information in his article Self-Publish — Understanding ISBN’s, SAN’s, LCCN’s Or PCN’s is wrong for 95.52% of the world’s population (according to Wikipedia).

Seriously. His article is written from an American viewpoint. It is perfectly valid in the United States. I happened to catch his article the day it was posted, and left a comment on his blog about the problems with it. James moderates comments, and my comment wasn’t posted.  It not only wasn’t posted, he didn’t correct the article.

I’m a small Canadian publisher. I know the Canadian rules (if you are Canadian, feel free to ask). If you are from any other country, you’ll have to do your homework. Each country has its own reasoning behind how it handles ISBNs. In the United States you pay for every ISBN. In Canada they are issued at no cost.

Be careful with what you read. Check it. Make sure it applied to your country too.

Book of Honor – Urbema – Chapter Six – First Draft

The Prologue and Chapter One are here, Chapter Two is here, Chapter Three is here, Chapter Four is here, Chapter Five is here. I want comments, otherwise I wouldn’t be posting this.

Don’t worry, my skin is pretty thick. I was a sales rep for a long time. I got used to having doors slammed in my face. My usual response to being told “NO” was to come back the next day and try to sell again. One of the jokes at the last place I worked was that customers bought from me to get me to go away <<<EVIL GRIN>>>.

Warning:

I don’t think I mentioned this before, because I’m Canadian, and we tend to take these things for granted. However a lot of nationalities tend to blow a fuse about nudity, swearing, sex and shit like that. This doesn’t contain anything that I wouldn’t show a teenager.

If you do not like minor scenes of nudity (like skinny dipping), do not read this. If you are bothered by stuff that our ancestors from the 19th century and before took for granted, like casual violence, do not read this. And please avoid history books. They contain far more violence than I could possibly ever dream up.
